When I was a little girl, my dad would make homemade burgers with cheese, and fries every Saturday night. We didn’t have a lot of money to feed six to dine out for a burger, so this was our go-to Saturday evening before Hockey Night in Canada at 7 pm. Tradition was greasy pan-fried burgers, fried onions, and sliced plastic cheese. We loved this greasy burger meal, and I can only assume that’s where my love of the burger began. Now, let’s be honest—my dad would buy McCain’s frozen fries, which where the only fries I knew – and we loved every bite! It wasn’t until I moved to Brantford Ontario, at 15 that I tried fresh cut fries from the chip wagon, and feel in love with the malty salty fresh cut fry.
There’s something special about discovering a truly fantastic burger and fries joint—especially one that’s tucked away in an unexpected corner of a small town or hidden along a scenic highway. These places aren’t always flashy or well-known, but they offer some of the best comfort food experiences you can find. For me, tracking down delicious destinations like Cravin a Burger in Burford Ontario, Fume Restobar in Brantford, and for a Chicken Tender Sandy Burger at Wicked Chicken in downtown Kitchener, has become an adventure of its own, combining my love for travel, food, and uncovering places that locals swear by. Whether it’s a family-run roadside diner, a decades-old mom-and-pop shop, or a food truck with a cult following, like Memphis Fire BBQ Grill in Stoney Creek, each place has its own unique story, flavour, and charm. I’m drawn to the spots where the patties are hand-formed, the buns are toasted just right, and the fries are crispy perfection. And let’s not forget the secret sauces and unexpected toppings that can elevate a burger from good to unforgettable. My fave is always a fresh battered crispy onion ring on top!
It’s those kinds of finds that make me want to keep exploring, keep tasting, and keep sharing these hidden treasures with others who appreciate a great meal off the beaten path.
Beyond Ontario, my travels have taken me to other incredible burger destinations. From classic diners in small-town West Montreal to unexpected burger havens in Winnipeg, I’ve learned that the best burgers aren’t always found in the bigger cities. The thrill is in the search, and the reward is in that first, satisfying bite.
I’d love to hear from fellow burger lovers—what’s the best hidden gem burger spot you’ve ever found? Whether it’s in Ontario or globally local, I’m always looking for my next great burger adventure
Cheers, Spicy Jan
